"We cre- ated a central court with the rooms on either side, plus a covered walkway to the Gathering Centre, capped by a long sloping roof that will be able to accommodate solar arrays," says Shaw, adding that the building has an east- west orientation for solar gains. "The interiors were developed to be warm and inviting, with glulam beams in the court, exposed timber treads on the stairs, six-foot wide corridors, and Shiplap wall panels for a cabin ambiance." Triple pane glazing and fibreglass exterior doors for each guest room contributes to the building's high R values. GenMec ACL Inc. broke ground on the project in October of 2020, and Marois notes that the company's excellence of construction and famil- iarity with the site (it too is a long time partner of Métis Crossing) compen- sated for COVID lockdown-related issues such as supply chain delays. For his part, Maurice Mercier, partner at GenMec, credits Shaw and her team for being "focused on their vision of the final product and con- stantly challenging our team to find solutions to construct that vision and keep us on budget. Now that the Métis Crossing Boutique Lodge is nearing completion, Marois takes time to consider another benefit it will have to the commu- nity. "We'll be able to have year-round tourism instead of seasonal," she says. "This is a beautiful addition to our community, and we're looking for- ward to other projects that will follow in its wake."
