RENDERINGS COURTESY ZEHR GROUP Kristen Dahmann, project co- ordinator at Zehr Levesque Inc., says excavation and shoring began in the fall of 2019: "The Huck Glove build- ing came with it's own challenges, but there was nothing that couldn't be overcome. The shell was generally in good shape. The brick facade was repointed with mostly minor repairs, and the wood floors and beams were sandblasted to expose the original wood finish. The old windows were replaced with new windows that reflect the original design. While the struc- tural integrity of the original building was entirely replaced with a new con- crete structure, its exterior and interior characteristics were retained." Dahmann adds that in addition to site constraints, the most challenging aspect of construction was replacing the existing foundation of the build- ing. "We had to dig underneath the existing footings and underpin them to chip them out and form new foot- ings. The existing columns had to be supported by a truss system that exemplified exceptional engineer- ing. It was a unique endeavour that we overcame due to having a team of highly skilled, capable, and flexible trade partners and engineers." As GloveBox nears completion, MacDonald says it would have been simpler to demolish the old factory and start fresh, but such an approach would have been unacceptable. "The factory is part of Kitchener's manu- facturing history, plus the city is now a tech hub that attracts many young professionals who enjoy the brick and beam look.
