Construction at Gilmour Place, Burnaby B.C. S E P T E M B E R 2 0 2 1 | 45 Reinforcing Steel This 301-foot tower, for which A&H provided detailing, production, and supply services, is conceived as playful aggregation of reflective yet transparent stacked boxes, each box containing four floors with its width roughly equivalent to its height. The stacked boxes create natural compartments within a continuous floor plate, allowing offices to be variously partitioned while also staying close to the facade. About 5,000 metric tonnes of steel was required for the building, and massive connections to huge blocks of steel had to be designed to accept the axial and vertical loads of the cubes. As striking as 400 West Georgia is, it's hardly the biggest recent project for which A&H has supplied product. The company was also responsible for the detailing, production, delivery, and installation of 11,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel for Calgary's Eighth Avenue Place, a twin downtown office tower project constructed on the former site of Calgary's Penny Lane Mall. This project involved one of the largest raft slabs constructed in Western Canada. Finally, AGF Rebar is the result of a merger of four Ontario companies owned by AGF Group; this merger, which brought together a team of 11 engineers and 33 certified technicians plus a highly qualified production and installation workforce, serves all of Ontario. AGF's Caraquet division is dealing with a high number of ongoing projects, one of which is the Northwest Miramichi River Bridge, whose construction commenced last October. AGF is in charge of the supply and installation of five pillars for the bridge, with two columns each. Two types of steel are being used: 271 metric tonnes of black steel and 90 metric tonnes of stainless steel. AGF's portion of the work is expected to be completed in August of 2022. AGF was also recently retained to help with the rehabilitation of the Louis- Hippolyte Lafontaine bridge-tunnel in Montreal, one of the busiest segments of the Trans-Canada Highway in the country. Acier AGF began supplying and installing rebar in June and will continue work until October of 2023; the scope of the work includes the construction of arches, a new floor in the ventilation towers, and airlocks in the corridors. Altogether over 1,328 metric tonnes of 500W grade crenelated steel will be used, along with over 630 metric tonnes of stainless steel, 686 metric tonnes of galvanized steel, and 10 metric tonnes of black steel.
