Giguere notes that the Cambridge project adhered to University District development guidelines: "This led to our project being developed to meet Built Green Canada standards, which required a careful selection of build- ing materials and other systems." As for the appearance of Cambridge Manor, Conroy says, "We acknowledged the District's contemporary style but also wanted to impart warmth and be inviting." Giguere adds, "We extended masonry along the main street for rich- ness and created an articulated window pattern. We also used aluminum sid- ing that resembles wood for durability and a pleasing effect, and we ensured that the main entrance was well pro- tected by a large canopy for residents' comfort for pick-up and drop-off." One highlight of the facility was an interior courtyard with a chapel enclosed by a series of tall, curving, concentric panels. "It's a real jewel, and I would describe it – along with other building design elements – as a unique experience connecting the interior experience with the outdoors and vice versa," says Giguere. Ground broke on the project in May of 2018, with Cambridge House over the course of 24 months taking shape as a structural steel building with a curtain wall envelope on a concrete foundation. Justin Estby, project man- ager for Clark Builders, says although the work was relatively unevent- ful, "We had to carefully co-ordinate activities given that Truman was building Maple on the same site." Estby adds that while the winter of 2018 was agreeable as far as Alberta winters go, "The following winter had one of the longest minus 30 cold stretches in years, making it impossi- ble to weld or pour concrete for several weeks. We ultimately maintained our schedule, though." For his part, Conroy is excited about the finished Cambridge House, which as of May was reaching full occupancy. "S2 Architecture shared our vision and were very engaged, and Clark Builders were well organized and stayed on time and on budget," he says. "With Alberta's senior population expected to reach one in five by 2031, Cambridge Manor will help address associated challenges."
