Catalyst, Spokane, WA. P H OTO G R A P H Y CO U RT E SY SA N S I N The company also worked on a six-storey building in downtown Edmonton that Villarroel says is unique in that it is a non-stacking shear load – the bottom two floors don't line up with one another or the top four floors. Just one example of ACQBuilt's versatility. GET YOUR COAT The team at Sansin continue to consult with architects, engineers, and manufacturers alike to understand each project's unique conditions, such as exposure, location, substrate, construction, and timelines. "We first look at the coating system from the perspective of wood protection and maintaining the integrity of the wood, which requires protec- tion from U V and moisture, and that could involve the use of our protective undercoat for engineered wood, Precision Coat KP-12," explains Caroline March-Long, Sansin director, sales and marketing. Then the team considers the esthetics and beauty objectives of the project and how this can be achieved with its exterior products, such as Precision Coat SDF or its interior solutions, such as Precision Coat Purity Glacier. "Through a custom consultation, an environmen- tally-friendly Sansin coating system for engineered wood is designed to achieve long-term durability, beauty, and maintainability," says March-Long. The company has been involved with some very impressive projects of late, including the five-storey Catalyst building in Spokane, WA – the first office building in the state constructed of environmen- tally friendly cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, which were sourced by Katerra. "To bring out the character of the wood and add to the sustainability requirements of the project, Sansin products were used throughout. Inside, Sansin's KP-12 U V W and SDF Topcoat in a custom tint were used on the lighter areas while Purity Stain [Midnight] and Purity Glacier created the bolder accents. The exterior CLT soffits, as well as the Alaskan yellow cedar clad- ding and columns, were coated with KP-12U V W and SDF Topcoat," explains March-Long. STICK TOGETHER Henkel, which supplies 90 percent of the adhesives used by the mass timber industry in North America, has also seen a greater push toward sustainability that is helping the market chug along. "Getting people to adopt the concept and embrace it from a sustainability standpoint has been the main driver for us this past year. As a result of COVID and var- ious codes and standards, people are ever more aware of the sustainability of EWP," says Chris Whelan at Henkel. He adds that companies like Google, Microsoft, and Walmart are showing increasing interest in EWP and that is bringing greater awareness to its benefits. Also, the 21-storey, 238-foot-tall residential Ascent tower in Milwaukee – set to be North America's tallest timber building – is helping prove its versatility. Loctite continues to be Henkel's leading product, and for good reason: it is durable, strong, and long lasting. Loctite Purbond is the only single-component adhesive approved by ANSI in Canada for mass tim- ber construction in North America. It contains no solvents, creates no liquid waste, and releases no toxic emissions. Loctite Purbond foams during curing, which helps to reduce air leakage in the finished ele- ments, so buildings are more efficient to heat and cool. Walmart's recent partnership with Structurlam to build a mass timber factory and construct its new headquarters campus in Arkansas, is indeed a big win for EWP. The entire campus will be mass timber con- struction, with Henkel supplying 100 percent of the adhesives. "This project will help drive greater adop- tion of sustainable timber construction," says Whelan. If mass timber construction continues to grow as it has, the building industry can expect a negative car- bon dioxide impact by 2034 – with mass timber projects offsetting concrete and steel. That's quite something! A Your masterpiece deserves the best wood protection. 1-877-SANSIN-1 sansinfactoryfinish.com
