"Also of note were the building foundations," says Edge. "The main building required a 400-cubic metre slab, and that was just one foot- ing. Concrete work overall was a series of steps and staggers, none of which were the same." As for the beams, posts, and other wood components, they were fabri- cated in Squamish. "Working with exactitudes of ¹⁄16 th of an inch wasn't uncommon," says Edge, adding that windows made in Korea had to be fabricated with painstaking preci- sion. Mabberley notes, "Comparing construction to that of a giant jigsaw puzzle is fairly appropriate." There were a variety of foundation conditions, with the development being located between a steep hill and the seashore. Micheál O'Keeffe, principal at Glotman Simpson Consulting Engineers, says, "The steep slope to the site required significant elevated concrete retain- ing walls to allow for the stepping of the buildings that had to be worked into the flow of the site." Kelty McKinnon, principal at PFS Studios, says, "We've been heav- ily involved on the project since 2015, designing the public realm and now monitoring construction of the design. The public realm includes the water- front promenade/boardwalk; terraced gardens, plazas and mews; the streetscapes; and all other public and private outdoor spaces. We worked closely with the client, architects, and the rest of the project team to ensure a public realm that is expressive of the unique topography, ecology, and com- munity life of Horseshoe Bay." As of May, the first two buildings are being prepared for occupancy, and Mabberley says of the project over- all, "what is being built is exactly what Paul Merrick envisioned. This is the only opportunity for residents to live on Howe Sound and still be surrounded by urban amenities, and we're excited to see the final outcome."
