Although this system is the most maintenance-intense of all, it's worth noting that it is still very similar to the care required for conventional landscaping. Soprema is a company that has paid very close attention to the ongoing objective of developers to reduce their carbon footprint, and this has resulted in its Sopra-XPS line of extruded polystyrene insula- tion panels. The new formula of the Sopra-XPS product line mainly replaces the use of HFC-134a and CO2 (which had a Global Warming Potential, or GWP, of 1,300) with a formula made of HFO and CO2 (which has a GWP of 1). In short, a 99.92 percent GWP reduction com- pared to the previous formula. Also, the panels are made of recycled No. 6 plastics, specifically, styrofoam cups, plates, bowls, veg- etable or meat trays, container and protective packaging. These mate- rials are crushed and transformed into small plastic balls, then mixed and heated with additives. Blowing agents are then added to the mix- ture in liquid form. The mixture is finally cooled and processed according to the dimensions and characteristics of the product. While these panels are invaluable to any insulation project, Soprema points out that the evolution of the Sopra-XPS line opens the way to a whole new generation of eco-friendlier products, both in terms of supply and at the end of their useful life. Vicwest's design engineers have significantly contributed to the advance- ment of metal roofing and wall systems that not only withstand tough weather conditions but enhance visual appeal, and one notable example is Bellara Steel Siding. Bellara's, 12-foot by 5.25-foot panels (of 26-gauge steel) are secured by hidden fasteners to create cladding that easily withstands extreme cold or blistering heat, as well as mould and mildew. Bellara also provides architects with design flexibility: the panels are finished with Vicwest's proprietary Expressence Paint System or WeatherXL to assure lasting colours or even lifelike wood grains. Plus, due to the system's resistance to warping, cracking, peeling, chipping, and burning, Bellara comes with a 40-year limited warranty. Tech-Crete Processors Ltd. is known as a manufacturer of composite insulating panels consisting of Styrofoam brand foam insulation combined with a factory applied latex modified concrete coating, the company's roof panels (CTI and SRI combined) to date cover over 20 million square feet of roofs across Canada. The CTI Roof Panels have proven to be incredibly durable over time, designed as a self ballasted insulating panel for use in a protected membrane roof assembly. Since U V radiation is the primary cause of membrane failure, the CTI panels offer superior insulation as well as U V protection in one easy step, along with protection from freeze-thaw cycling, thermal cycling, and physical damage. Tech-Crete SRI roof panels provide equal membrane protection, but they are also designed to minimize the heat island effect of low-sloped roofs and qualify for LEED credits (the panels are solar reflecting); also, since the white concrete topping maintains its solar reflectivity throughout its entire thickness, there is no reflective coating to maintain or reapply. A simple rinse or light pres- sure wash will rejuvenate the solar reflectivity. Longboard Products' contribution to the roofing/cladding sector is the SimpL-Clip, a thermal barrier that reduces the thermal transfer from the interior to the exterior and whose superior performance has been verified by Morrison Hershfield. SimpL-Clip has been engineered to perform on all sub- strates, including concrete, concrete block, steel studs, or wood. One SimpL-Clip and aluminum T-Girt can accommodate a variety of insulation thicknesses or wall depths, eliminating the need for shims or multiple clip sizes.
