The old interior had a lack of ceil- ing space plus a network of glulam beams, all of which made the place- ment of new ducts and cables difficult – especially considering the exist- ing system had to continue operating until the project was completed. But Serge LaBrie, director of facilities at PSD, says the effort was worth it: "The upgraded mechanical and electri- cal equipment plus an extensive solar panel system will help us lower oper- ating costs for decades." Chris Miskolzie, superinten- dent, Stuart Olson, says the project's success was due to "clear and con- stant communication between us, Chris Shaw, and other stakehold- ers. Our primary objective was keeping the students safe, and this informed every aspect of our work, from putting up fencing and pouring concrete to scheduling deliveries." Boyce adds, "Stuart Olson's chal- lenges were compounded by a large portion of the construction occur- ring during the pandemic, when we were desperately trying to keep kids in school. Again, the contractor rose to the challenge by implementing strict safety measures." With the new Woodhaven Middle School now up and running, Shaw says he is dazzled by the final product: "The building exceeds any expecta- tions we could have imagined, and will adapt to the needs of ever-chang- ing teaching and learning approaches. Succinctly, the inside and outside of the building are beautiful."
