D E C E M B E R 2 0 2 1 | 49 Student Housing – Coast Mountain College "Every single piece of art was cre- ated by either a current student, an alumni or an instructor in our Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art. In front, we have a 20-foot totem pole that's going to be put up outside, although it's not quite ready yet," he says. "These pieces of art tell our story and tell the story of First Nations that we serve in our region. Each piece of art has a provenance plaque that tells a little bit about the students, when they graduated from the pro- gram, and an explanation of the story that's reflected in the piece. Students who live there can learn about First Nations cultures simply by walking around the building." He adds the school population has a large inter- national contingency. "When they come from their home nations and arrive here to live on campus, they're exposed to our region, regional cul- ture, and stories." Robert Maniere, VP of operations at Modus Structures Inc., explains the different aspect of this building was that it was a combination of site built and off-site modular construc- tion. "We have done several projects with First Nations so we are sensitive to their design needs, and the biggest considerations are energy efficiency, durability, and high-quality construc- tion," he says. "I think the biggest wow factor was the energy code with the achievement of BC Energy Step Code 4. It was also in the design, integrating traditional wood construction with structural insulated panels. We used our SIP panels that are proprietary to Modus for the third-floor roofing system," Maniere adds. Craig Cocker, director, build- ings enterprise, IDL Projects Inc. and design-build lead for the student housing project says he was impressed with the co-ordination between hcma's architectural vision and CMTN's furniture and artwork instal- lations. "A lot of thought was given to how the building will not only show- case but also complement the artwork that was installed. The exterior cladding pattern gives the appearance of a weave pattern that interacts with the cedar siding and the exterior art- work installations."
