62 | O C T O B E R 2 0 2 0 Cooksville GO Station and Parking Structure Initial design concepts for the design build project were consid- ered by Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx as far back as 2016, and WalterFedy was engaged to "Resolve the complexity of the parking struc- ture's facade geometry, refine the public realm, and simplify other aspects of the design," according to Van Dyk. Tyler Pfaff, project manager at EllisDon Design Build Inc. (which broke ground on the project in November of 2017 after the original sta- tion and portions of the parking lot were demolished), adds, "The chal- lenges of construction were many. I had a set of elevations and fixed standards that we had to build to, and at one point early on we had to 'push' all the struc- tures eight feet south to accommodate future planning and design." Another notable challenge was that construction took place while the railway lines were fully func- tional. "There were daily constraints and we couldn't work near the tracks, plus whenever freight trains on the CP tracks appeared – which were unscheduled events – we had to stop what we were doing," says Pfaff. Accordingly, the installation of the pedestrian bridge over the tracks required EllisDon to work within a tight four-hour window, during which time it lifted the completely fitted-out structure into place and connected it to the parking structure. Existing underground links to the central train platform were reused and extended to the new station and parking structure. As of September, the Cooksville GO Station and Parking Structure was substantially completed, barring some minor deficiencies and the pub- lic plaza was nearing completion, and Van Dyk and Pfaff are excited with the final product. "The final design remained true to concept, and we enjoyed a healthy collaborative pro- cess with all parties," says Van Dyk.
