Although architects are ultimately responsi- ble for the performance of an envelope, Bergen and Pickwick view the emphasis towards energy efficiency as an opportunity for that profession to employ a host of solutions. The latter says, "fram- ing, window-to-wall ratio, cantilevered balconies, architectural expression of concrete, structural components, and many other creative elements each play a role in creating an enclosure that avoids thermal bridging and achieves a high level of air- tightness that lives up to energy standards." The duo welcome the increasing focus on proper calculation and modelling, as no amount of physi- cal testing or field observation can compensate for an envelope whose design was flawed from the out- set. "Being able to verify the integrity of the design is vital, and while many programs can model a build- ing enclosure's performance, the results are only as good as the inputs provided," says Pickwick. In layman's terms, the closer a project comes to creating the ideal envelope, the more emphasis on effective ventilation to capitalize on heat recov- ery and at the same negate the health concerns sometimes associated with air-tightness. "When the mechanical consultants and trades know the metrics they have to account for, they can more effi- ciently design and build to them," says Pickwick. Capital Park 4, Victoria, B.C.
