Application of Soprema's SOPRA-SPF 202 closed-cell polyurethane foam. O C T O B E R 2 0 2 0 | 13 Building Envelope P H OTO G R A P H Y CO U RT E SY S O P R EM A "Moving forward, their designs will complement the envelope in a highly effi- cient manner instead of compensating for a poor envelope's deficiencies." The Canadian Precast Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI) is actively involved in advanced education in the building envelope and infrastructure fields, and recently it launched Learn on Demand Prefab Precast Concrete, a free platform and a continuing series of interactive educational courses geared towards architects, engineers, real estate developers, academics, students, gov- ernment officials, and construction professionals who want to learn more about precast concrete products and services. Brian Hall, managing director of the CPCI, says, "We launched in April with eight or nine presentations and will be adding one new presentation monthly. Since our launch over 1,000 professionals have used the platform, and part of our success is due to the fact it's available 24/7. This is the alternative to the many available information webinars whose rigid scheduling dissuades people from actively taking courses, and with our platform we oblige users to answer questions about each section of the presentations before being allowed to move forward. So there's accountability along with flexibility." Upon finishing the presentations the viewers receive a certificate of participation and completion to qualify for Professional Development Hours and/or Continuing Education Units. Additionally, CPCI has augmented Learn on Demand with Ed Chats: 10- to 12-minute educational exchanges on a number of subject matters, including building envelopes. "This was inspired by TED Talks, and the presentations are led by educators, AEC professionals, researchers, and industry associates," says Hall. Soprema is equally devoted to advanced education and training, and in rec- ognition of the National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) aiming by 2030 to achieve Net Zero energy consumption for all new buildings in Canada, the com- pany has launched its Build Better Guide for wall systems, for professionals in the design, implementation, and construction of commercial buildings. Catherine Lavoie Canuel, Soprema's building envelope product manager, says, "The guide is available online to download, and it helps professionals build better wall assemblies by instructing them about the right amount of insula- tion from Soprema needed for effective U-values and R-values for walls and their components and to meet the NECB." The guide describes two types of exterior wall assemblies that have been tested and approved: exterior continuous insulated wall, and hybrid insulated wall (exterior continuous insulated walls do not represent a hazard regarding moisture management, but hybrid insulated walls do). "With this guide, profes- sionals will be able to choose the right Soprema solutions whether they are air barriers, insulation technology, or accessories," says Lavoie Canuel. As for envelope-related products, Soprema's new SOPR A-SPF 202 is com- pliant with the impending new regulations concerning blowing agents used in spray foam and is available in two versions according to temperature appli- cation. Designed for exterior as well as interior applications, this closed-cell polyurethane foam will not degrade or settle over time, thus ensuring consis- tent performance throughout the life of the building. Whereas in the U.S. manufacturers tend to make insulation panels for build- ing envelopes that are low strength but high density, Building Products of Canada (BP Canada) strives to make panels that are high strength and lower density with higher R-values. Its specialty panel in this realm, Excel, is made by applying an air barrier membrane to a structural high-resistance wood fibre Waterproof your concrete permanently with integral or surface-applied self- sealing Krystol ® technology.
