48 | O C T O B E R 2 0 2 0 Reinforcing Steel Also for the floor system, the upper and lower CLT panel intersections were joined together using the HSK connection system. This involved short saw-cuts through the edges of the panels creating a continuous vertical kerf. A perforated metal plate was then placed in the saw-cut, and the void was filled with epoxy glue. The result was an extremely strong and elastic connection that created a composite structure in which the upper and lower panels act together. Advances in the reinforcing steel sector continue despite the pandemic, case in point: ClarkDietrich, the manufacturer of drywall studs, structural studs and joists, metal lath, and many other products, announced in August that it is expanding its ClipExpress portfolio with a new Universal Bypass Clip. The significance of the clip is that it gives contractors a singular solution for attach- ing exterior curtain wall studs to the building structure, whether the design calls for a deflection connection for vertical movement independent of the cold- formed steel framing or a rigid connection. Brett Hironimus, director of sales for ClarkDietrich Clip Express, says, "Our new Universal Bypass Clip aligns with the larger industry trend toward univer- sal clips that allow for more flexibility on the jobsite. "It also provides the assurances that come with a pre-engineered and pre-manufactured connector, as opposed to untested field-fabricated solutions still in existence. And by offering the Universal Bypass Clip in a wide range of sizes and gauges, ClarkDietrich is a natural partner for contractors looking for maximum flexibility for jobs of any size." Finally, when it is eventually completed The One condominium in Toronto will be the tallest building in Canada at 309 metres, and for this massive struc- ture Salit Steel teamed up with Anchor Shoring (now GFL) to create some of the largest caisson cages ever supplied in the Greater Toronto Area. Ninety-eight cages each weighing up to 15 metric tonnes were made from 55M Grade 500 rebar. Because there was no fabrication space on site, 68, four-foot diameter cages were welded in Salit Steel's Stelcrete shop in Wellend and transported three at a time on Salit trucks. The remaining 30 cages each at 10 feet in diameter and over 60-feet long were shipped in one piece using special freight. All of the cages have been successfully lifted to their final resting place over 120 feet below street level at Yonge and Bloor. These large caissons are part of a structural design that uses a rare structural steel exoskeleton combined with reinforced concrete that eliminates interior columns within the building.
