Thanks to the participation of SMT Research Ltd., the Innovation Centre will also be a "living lab" for students. That's because SMT installed 250 sen- sors on the roof and will install over 150 in the envelope so that moisture, heat flux, and overall thermal perfor- mance can be monitored. "The roof sensors were placed on the vapour barrier, and they'll also be placed on the interior drywall and on the exterior," says Hasma Mustapha, SMT's regional project manager for Manitoba. "We'll guide Red River stu- dents on how to conduct analysis." Frank Koreman, project manager at Akman Construction Ltd., antici- pated delivery of an estimated 725 wall panels and their installation before the end of the year. "So far the construction process has gone smoothly despite COVID-19 requiring well established safety protocols and the Innovation Centre being located in a tight site and requiring just-in-time deliveries and other strategies," he says. "Fortunately, we haven't experienced any setbacks in materials procurement." As of September, Akman's team was anticipating enclosing the Innovation Centre in time for the onset of a Winnipeg winter. "We're optimistic about achieving substantial completion for summer of 2021, and considering we built the Roblin Centre many years ago it's been an honour to work again with Red River on this legacy project," says Akman director Jared Akman. For her part, Maria Mendes couldn't be more excited about the outcome. "Akman as always has been terrific, and we really enjoyed a one-two punch with Diamond Schmitt and Number TEN," she says. "Aside from adding 100,000 square feet to our existing 250,000 square feet in the Exchange District, the Innovation Centre is won- derful proof that our campus is a major presence in the region."
