E-freight is an industry-wide initiative that involves carriers, freight forwarders, ground handlers, shippers, customs brokers and customs authorities to replace paper documents used in all types of transport with electronic messages. Launched in November 2007 in six countries, Canada being one of them, the program has measurable results: it eliminates, on average, more than 7,800 tonnes of paper documents every year— enough to fill 80 Boeing 747 freighters. "We support research and development and the exploration of innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint," says Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada's president and CEO. "It also means that we conduct ourselves and govern our business in a way that is transparent, ethical and accountable. Over the past five years Air Canada Cargo has opened up shipping possibilities with new international routes and kept an eye on environmentalism by modernizing its fleet. Aircraft such as the 787 Dreamliner offer greater fuel efficiency and uplift and complement the company's 777 fleet, with its increased capacity and range. Johanne Cadorette, manager, marketing and communications for Air Canada Cargo, says, "With better aircraft deployed on a growing global network, Air Canada Cargo is poised to play a significant role as air freight globally continues its upward swing in volumes." ■ FROM VANCOUVER TO NEW YORK IN TIME FOR DINNER.
