6 BCBUSINESS JUNE 2020 PORTRAIT: ADAM BLASBERG T he world sure has changed since the last time I wrote one of these. That was way back in March, just before my wife and I flew (imagine!) to Costa Rica for what now feels like the last normal vacation, ever. We made the most of that week on Sámara Beach, but by about Thursday, the news coming out of the phone started eclipsing our view. It's now mid-May, and I've yet to make it back to the office. Like many of you, our team has had to adjust to working from home—and accept that doing business might never be the same. Among other changes, this is the first issue of BCBusiness produced via Zoom and other digital tools, from basement offices and kitchen tables. That's one of the more benign outcomes of COVID-19, which has dealt our trade- and tourism-reliant province a heavy blow. If you've lost your job or your business in the pandemic, I'm deeply sorry. By the time you read this issue, I hope B.C. will have taken further cautious steps to reopen the economy and get people back to work. I'm also very grateful that BCBusiness has kept going, thanks to the support of our read- ers and advertisers. Although we skipped an issue, we've been pro- viding extensive online coverage of the COVID situation—and now that the print magazine is back on track, we'll continue to help you make sense of this strange new reality. But first, it's time to celebrate. One thing I've noticed lately is that people are hungry for good- news stories like contributor Darian Kovacs' weekly online column, which highlights orga- nizations that are helping others. That's why we decided to stick with the plan to make the 30 Under 30 (p.17) our cover story. For seven years, this competition has honoured the province's best and bright- est young business talents. Some of the 2020 winners have thrived during the crisis, while others face big challenges. (Social distancing rules prevented us from taking group portraits, and the delay in our schedule means that a couple have now passed the 30 milestone.) But given their life stories so far, we can count on all of them to lead B.C. into the future. Speaking of talented young people, I'm pleased to welcome assistant editor Alyssa Hirose to the team. A recent UBC grad, Hirose joined us from our sister publica- tion Vancouver magazine in—wouldn't you know it?—March. It's great to have her in the office, wherever that may be.
