West End
D
espite being just minutes from Vancouver's business core, the
densely populated West End feels more like a good-times beach
town rather than an inner-city neighbourhood. Davie Street,
with its boutique shops and lively nightlife, forms the cultural hub for the
community. And Denman Street is known for its stellar culinary offerings
– everything from Japanese izakayas and African steakhouses through to
gelato and cupcakes is represented along the strip. The ever-popular English
Bay beach, with its sandy stretches and waterfront promenade, makes for a
natural people-watching spot.
The centre of Vancouver's gay community, the West End certainly
celebrates its diversity and welcoming atmosphere – check out the rainbow-
coloured crosswalks and bus shelters that are painted pink!
