10 fall/winter 2016 psf.ca Lucky Langereis The Pacific Salmon Foundation's annual Vancouver Gala turned it up a notch in 2016 by debuting on a Friday for the first time, and bringing in a gregarious Honourary Chair to match, in the form of Delta Land Development President Bruce Langereis. The combination was a success, as the event raised an unprecedented $275,000, in large part thanks to sponsors, including Goldcorp, Aburi Restaurants Canada, Nemetz Electrical, Leith Wheeler, FAS Seafood Producers, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, David Elliott and Helijet. A year of firsts, the 2016 Gala featured our inaugural Lucky 7 auction; seven flasks were auctioned off separately, after which the winners gathered on-stage and took a swig together. Langereis himself (pictured centre) wound up with the winning flask, which was filled with tequila, and got to choose any one of the first seven live auction items. The six other bidders walked away with a refreshing drink of water. The Pacific Salmon Foundation is excited to announce a delicious new partnership with Postmark Brewing. The Vancouver-based craft beer company has started retailing PSF Lager, with proceeds supporting the Foundation's Community Salmon Program. "This project is something close to our hearts here at Postmark," says Nate Rayment, co-founder and managing director for Postmark Brewing. "I have personally spent my entire life fishing the ocean and rivers of B.C. – from guiding up in Haida Gwaii and the Central Coast for years, to now spending every free moment away from the brewery out on the water. The idea to work with the Pacific Salmon Foundation was a no-brainer; we are honoured to have a way to give back to something that means so much to us." PSF Lager is available at private retailers, restaurants, fishing lodges in B.C. and at Postmark's retail location at 55 Dunlevy Avenue in Vancouver. No doubt, that evening brew will taste just a little bit sweeter with the knowledge that you're doing your part for salmon conservation projects across the province. Helping Salmon … One Brew at a Time Save Salmon, Save the Whales A major goal of the Pacific Salmon Foundation's Salish Sea Marine Survival Project is increased production and survival of Chinook salmon in the Strait of Georgia. Given that Chinook salmon are the primary food source of the resident orcas, it's no wonder so many whale watching companies are pitching in to help us reach this goal. In 2016, Vancouver Whale Watch and BC Whale Tours joined Prince of Whales Whale Watching, Orca Spirit Adventures and Eagle Wing Tours in asking their customers to donate $1 per trip to support our efforts in the Salish Sea. Since 2014, whale watching companies have helped raise more than $100,000. Orcas in the Strait of Georgia depend on Chinook salmon to survive.
