FALL 2015 simon 57 SFU.CA I n 1996, SFU and the City of Burnaby adopted an Official Com- munity Plan, recently revised in 2008, to guide land use and devel- opment on Burnaby Mountain. The plan called for two mixed-use neighbourhoods to the east and south of the campus, now collectively known as UniverCity. Each neighbourhood was to include an elementary school and a park. The first residential building began construction in 2003 and opened a year later. University Highlands Elementary School opened in 2010, and the UniverCity Childcare Centre opened in 2012. The community cur- rently has 3,200 residents, with a goal to house 10,000 residents when all building phases have been completed. Today, UniverCity is an award- winning, mixed-use, transit-oriented community that serves as a worldwide model for practical and affordable sustainable development. BUILDING CAMPUSES + COMMUNITIES Since then, SFU's continued campus expansion has remained true to Erickson's and Massey's design, and Shrum's vision. Key buildings added over the years include Robert C. Brown Hall in 1970, Maggie Benston Centre in 1973, the Education Building in 1978, Shrum Science Centre—kinesiology in 1980, Applied Sciences building in 1989, South Sciences building in 1992, West Mall Centre in 1994, and Technology & Science Complex 1 in 2005 and Complex 2 in 2006. The most recent additions are Saywell and Blusson Halls, which opened in 2007 and 2008. Respecting Shrum's desire for stu- dents to move from one end of the campus to the other without going outside, Saywell and Blusson Halls connect to the northeast cor- ner of the Academic Quadrangle. Students can travel under cover all the way to West Mall Centre and back. Plans are currently underway to build a new Student Union Building on the south side of Freedom Square between the Maggie Benston Centre and the Academic Quad- rangle. —A.T.
