FALL 2015 simon 21 SFU.CA EMBRACING EXPERIENCE Professor Parzival Copes develops Canada's fi rst Executive MBA program during a radical revolt on campus, basing his pioneering program on the Harvard model, which accepted high-level work experience for admission in lieu of a bachelor's degree. Copes runs the program during the eve- nings on a part-time basis. 68 SFU is the fi rst university to launch a master's program in pest management. MUSICAL CUES Professor R. Murray Schafer establishes The World Soundscape Project (WSP), an educational and research group. Comprised of composers and students, the group recorded "The Vancouver Soundscape" and, later, "Sound- scapes of Canada," which served as the foundation for the CBC "Ideas" radio series. Schafer became one of Canada's most acclaimed composers and music educators. SFU is the fi rst university to initiate computerized registration. Late 1960s, early 1970s The fi rst Women's Centre on SFU's campus is opened. ■ A UNIFIED VOICE SFU's student newspaper, The Peak, is formed after editorial teams from The Tartan and SF View (both launched within weeks of the University opening) join forces to create a single, unifi ed voice for the student body. The name is democratically chosen by students in a contest and a week later they publish the fi rst issue. 1965 GREY MATTERS Hal Weinberg becomes a professor of psy- chology at SFU. Since 1964, he's been at the vanguard of develop- ment in non-invasive techniques to map brain activity, such as magnetoencepha- lography (MEG) and electroencephalogra- phy (EEG). More than three decades later, Weinberg's research continues; his lab leads an international study (with seven projects in fi ve countries) on brain "plasticity"—how brain physiology changes as a result of experience. 1970 73 1974 68 71 The SFU Childcare Centre opens as a cooperative family drop-in.
