Ask any SFU alumnus to recall the convocation ceremony and it likely includes the memory of sombre silence broken by the spine-tingling drone of the pipes, stirring up emotions that ripple across Convocation Mall. The SFU Pipe Band has earned its place in the local spotlight—and on the world stage—many times over. In 1995, 29 years into its illustrious history, the band won the Grade One World Pipe Band Championship in Glasgow, Scotland. It was an honour they'd take home the following year, and again in 1999, 2001, 2008 and 2009. The Sound of SFU 1995 2004 It's a decade full of SFU fi rsts and new paradigms, where insects and geographical profi ling are crime-fi ghting tools, pain management gets gamifi ed, and SFU's library goes virtual SFU launches the fi rst virtual university library with a website and web catalogue. It's the world's fi rst inertial sensor with no moving mechanical parts. The estimated $1-billion market for the innova- tion includes medical and industrial sensors, home appliances and space probes to Mars and beyond. 1999 STRENGTH IN NUMBERS SFU and the BC Cancer Agency offi cially join forces to combat cancer, signing a research and intellectual property affi liation agreement that expands their existing relationship.
