salmon Steward magazine 23 a BiG CaTCh The Pacific Salmon Foundation's 2014 year-end appeal was our most successful yet. With the help of longtime partners and some exciting new ones, we were able to raise $165,000 for the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project. Special thanks to members of the Major Donors Circle who created a generous $50,000 matching fund, including Bob Gayton, Knelson Family Foundation, Westcoasters and Peetz manufacturing. Other major contributions came from methanex, lagniappe Foundation, viewWest Foundation, Wolrige Foundation, Goldcorp CEo Chuck Jeannes, Tookie angus, dave Elliot, Scott lamont, Sonora resort and others. A big thank-you to all of our generous donors! mEmorial donaTionS Several years ago a group of fishing buddies hailing from the U.S., Canada and Japan contacted the Pacific Salmon Foundation. Every year they had been getting together for a special West Coast fishing adventure in memory of their dear friend Rob McRae, who loved to fish. In his memory they started the rob mcrae memorial Fund, which as of last year generated more than $150,000 for Pacific salmon. In the same vein, igloo Building Supplies has supported the Foundation with pledges totalling more than $100,000; their most recent pledge was made in memory of late fishing guide Jesse Jones, who frequently guided for Westcoast Resorts at a remote fishing lodge in Englefield Bay on Haida Gwaii. We tip our cap to Rob, Jesse and the friends who chose to honour their memory in such a heartfelt and constructive fashion. PoWEr To ThE PEoPlE The Pacific Salmon Foundation's flagship Community Salmon Program supports volunteers who do the real heavy-lifting for Pacific salmon. Since 1989, the program has grown from supporting four projects per year to more than 100, largely thanks to individuals, corporations and government that recognized the need to empower communities to be leaders in salmon conservation. A critical step forward in this initiative came in 2013, when Fisheries and oceans Canada began returning 100 per cent of proceeds from the annual Salmon Conservation Stamp to B.C. salmon conservation projects through the Foundation, increasing available grants for volunteers by about $1 million. TimberWest, newalta, BC hydro, haida Tourism and new Gold, among others, also provide critical support for this program. >> Longtime supporter TimberWest helped fund more than 20 projects through the Community Salmon Program last year, including an eelgrass restoration project in Courtenay. Year-end appeal donations will help fund more than 25 projects, including the study of forage fish abundance through egg collection and mapping spawning sites.
