R O A D S I D E To Stop a Thief 42 bCA A .CoM winter 2014 "People do get complacent about the prob- lem," he says, adding that most cars are stolen for use in other crimes, includ ing break-and-enters, or more daringly, smash-and-grab operations where thieves drive the stolen cars through shop windows in order to loot the store. Jadis says that the most effective tool for preventing auto theft is a vehicle immo- bilizer, which has been mandatory on new passenger cars sold in Canada since 2007. Immobilizers cut three vital cir- cuits: starter, ignition and fuel, making it virtually impossible for thieves to start the motor without the key. These simple and inexpensive devices can be retrofit- ted to almost any vehicle for about $150. As part of its "Operation Keep Safe" program, the Vancouver Police Depart- ment is offering free immobilizers and installation to Vancouver residents with disabilities whose vehicles are adapted with equipment like wheelchair lifts or steering hand controls (call 604- 717-2842 for details). The program also provides free steering-wheel locks to Vancouverites who own one of the 10 most frequently stolen vehicle types (contact your local Community Policing Office for info). While there's no prov- ince-wide program similar to Operation Keep Safe, check with your local police department on its latest initiatives. Keep Your Car Safe Fortunately, there are many simple steps you can take to prevent your vehicle from being stolen, including the following tips: • Lock your vehicle and don't leave your keys (or spare keys) in the car. (Don't laugh. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, approximately 20 per cent of all stolen cars had the keys in them.) • Invest in a good anti-theft device/ immobilizer. Advertise you have one by affixing a window decal. • Don't leave any belongings visible in your vehicle. • Park in well-lit, open areas, near pedestrian activity if possible. • Never assume your vehicle won't attract a thief. Older cars are often targets since they're generally less well protected. • Avoid build-up of old insurance decals when applying new ones (they're easier to peel off and steal). • Ensure the gates close behind you when entering or leaving secure parking areas. iStock 2 # Honda Civic 1 # Ford F Series 5 Most stolen Vehicles in B.c. for 2013 Source: ICBC
