thanks to new technologies,
more effective policing and height-
ened public awareness, the number
of cars stolen annually in B.C. has
been dropping steadily from a high
of 26,000 in 2003 to 6,400 in 2013.
Statistically it's a good-news story,
but that still leaves an average of
17 cars a day in our province end-
ing up in the hands of thieves. More
recently, there have been spikes in
the number of cars stolen in certain
areas, like New Westminster and
Abbotsford. Part of the problem,
says Insp. Peter Jadis of IMPACT, the
provincial crime unit dedicated to
fighting auto crime, is that too many
of us are now dropping our guard. ⊲

DID
YOU KNOW?
Your car may have a
secret hidden key. Some
vehicles come equipped with
"valet keys," often stored
inside the owner's manual.
You'll want to remove it
before a thief finds it.
