• Located right
downtown on Robson
Street, the Vancouver
Art Gallery is a city
landmark, known for its
progressive approach
and exciting exhibitions.
The gallery has nearly
8,000 pieces in its
permanent collection,
including the largest
collection of work
by acclaimed British
Columbia artist Emily
Carr, and attracts
travelling exhibitions of
world renown.
• The Bill Reid
Gallery of Northwest
Coast Art showcases
the permanent
collection of acclaimed
Haida artist Bill Reid
(1920–1988) alongside
changing exhibitions of
contemporary Northwest
Coast art. Highlights
include stunning gold
and silver jewelry,
monumental sculptures
and a towering totem
pole by James Hart of
Haida Gwaii.
• A striking modern
building designed by
renowned Vancouver
architect Arthur Erickson,
overlooking the ocean
on the campus of
the University of
British Columbia,
the UBC Museum
of Anthropology
is art in its own
right. But in fact, it
houses the world's
best collection of
Northwest Coast
art, and an astounding
535,000 archeological
objects from cultures
around the world.
• Just a hop across
campus, your clients
will find a rich collection
of bird, insect, fossil
and plant specimens to
explore at UBC's Beaty
Biodiversity Museum.
The museum's crowning
jewel is Canada's largest
skeleton of a blue whale
– Earth's largest animal –
stretching 26.8 metres
(88 feet) long.
• Your clients can also
learn about the seedier
side of the city at the
Vancouver Police
Museum, which offers
a popular Sins of the
City tour; exhibits about
infamous murders and
unsolved cases; an
extensive collection of
police artifacts, weapons
and seized evidence;
and even the city's old
morgue complete with
autopsy oddities.
• For a more local
history lesson, the
Museum of Vancouver
can't be beat. Along
with permanent exhibits
covering Vancouver's
growth since its
incorporation in 1886,
the museum also
mounts some quirky
exhibitions that offer an
inside look at issues that
have shaped or are still
shaping the city.
• Sports fans of all
ages will appreciate
the BC Sports Hall
of Fame and Museum
at BC Place Stadium,
where visitors can get
to know the province's
top athletes and relive
Vancouver's glory
during the 2010 Olympic
Winter Games.
• At the Burnaby
Village Museum,
your clients can step
back in time to stroll
down a village street
– a combination of
heritage and replica
buildings – in 1920s
British Columbia. Period
costumed townsfolk
welcome visitors and give
demonstrations in the
homes, businesses and
shops. No visit is complete
without a whirl on the
historic 1912 CW Parker
Carousel, accompanied
by music from a 1925
Wurlitzer band organ.
• Families will also enjoy
learning about Canada's
strong seafaring heritage
at the Vancouver
Maritime Museum.
Visitors are greeted at
the entrance by a Royal
Canadian Mounted
Police schooner, the
St. Roch, while the
exhibitions delve into
everything from pirates
and shipwrecks to deep-
ocean exploration and
the world of steamships.
