OFTEN CITED as one of the most beautiful food magazines in North America, Anna was born in 2006 in creator Mari Loewen's Winnipeg basement. e magazine was a passion project, inspired by the love- lled, organic (before that was a trend) food on her mother's table and the entrepreneurial make-it-from-scratch bug she says she inherited from her father. Devotees wait for each themed issue with its luscious photography and inspiring quotes, from Plato to Julia Child. "Annais food porn at its most elegant," New York-based Saveur magazine said of the quarterly. Loewen admits she "agonizes over every detail." e result is a sensual but minimalist aesthetic that has in uenced many Canadian food magazines. (It's said that you'll nd copies of Anna in the editorial meeting rooms of all the competition.) Issues aren't dated but named, ensuring a timelessness to each. ey are peppered with soulful anecdotes that return to Anna 's theme of making each day special. To take Anna 's success even further, Loewen has "really 'boutiqued' the business," opening a kitchen and event space that hosts private parties, cooking classes and corporate functions, often using recipes from her magazine. e gorgeous, industrial-looking space at 1079 Wellington Avenue in an unassuming part of town has no signage outside ("So you can feel you're in my kitchen," explains Loewen) and boasts a harvest table, concrete oors and a SoHo feel. Events sometimes end with ballroom dancing. Very Anna. www.everything-anna.com –Karen Burshtein HALLOWEEN is no longer just one day of free candy.
