Return of the Raiders by Lea Currie LANDMARKS 66 G O I N G P L A C E S | S U M M E R 2 0 1 4 KEN GILLESPIE/GETTY IMAGES S tanding on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg, this 4.5-metre-tall Viking is ready to set sail. Designed by Gissur Eliasson and created by artist George Barone in 1967, the breglass gure is a striking monument to those settlers who rst arrived in Gimli almost 140 years ago. Today, the area is home to the largest Icelandic settlement outside of Iceland. Join this Norseman in feast, ght and frolic at Gimli's annual Icelandic Festival of Manitoba. Also known as "Islendingadagurinn," the province's longest-running festival celebrates its 125th anniversary August 1-4, 2014. Witness history up close at the Viking Village, where costumed locals re-enact daily Viking life. Mingle with leather workers, woodcrafters and weavers, but don't get too close when mercenaries head into combat to show o their skills with swords, spears and battle-axes. For a child-friendly lesson in medieval battle tactics, take the little ones through "Kiddy Vike." Refuel with authentic Icelandic food – from rullupylsa (a spiced lamb dish served on brown bread) to vinarterta (an Icelandic torte) – while you tap your foot to a mix of Icelandic and Canadian music. Come raid New Iceland and plunder the booty that this strong, erce culture has to o er. icelandicfestival.com GP p66-67Landmarks.indd 66 14-04-10 2:32 PM
