(ICE CREAM) CORNELL CRÈME, (PLANTER BOX) JULES XAVIER S U M M E R 2 0 1 4 | G O I N G P L A C E S 17 Communities that Grow Together, Stay Together Congratulations to CFB Shilo for winning the Canadian Forces Sustainable Communities award from Communities in Bloom – a non-pro t organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental respon- sibility and beauti cation, with a focus on enhancing green spaces around the country. The base introduced a residential planter box program that provided landscape ties to any resident who wanted to create one. More than 130 families planted a garden, which helped beautify the housing units and strengthen the community spirit throughout the base. communitiesinbloom.ca Rainbow After the Rain Crème OF THE Crop Cornell Crème products may look lighter in colour than other ice cream, but they certainly don't pale in compari- son when it comes to avour. The beauty of this Manitoba- made ice cream, and the reason why it's not as bright as the competition, is that it has no preservatives. The base recipe calls for just milk, cream, eggs and sugar. Simple and deli- cious. No wonder the cold treat is being scooped up as quickly as owner-operator Lisa Dyck can ll new tubs. The cherry on top: Dyck happens to live on a dairy farm, which means the ingredients are homegrown. "Because we're also a farm, we can milk cows on Tuesday and make ice cream by Friday," says Dyck, the only local producer-processor of ice cream. From Velvety Chocolate Truf e and Malty Pale Ale to Lemon Meringue and Raspberry White Chocolate, Cornell Crème avours will soon extend to Red Red Wine and Blueberry Lavender Dream. Get in on the scoop at stores specializing in Manitoba-made products or restaurants and events throughout the province. cornellcreme.com And They Lived Happily Ever After It only makes sense that Winnipeg, the "heart of the continent," is where Harlequin, the leading publisher of romance novels, was created. e story of how prominent Winnipegger Richard Bonnycastle and partners started the business is near forgotten, but one worth telling. Born Out of Love, a new homegrown documentary by Aaron Zeghers and Ryan Simmons, narrates the local history of this multi-million-dollar company and also explores the contemporary romance industry. Funded by MTS Winnipeg On-Demand, the documentary is available for free through MTS TV (go to On-Demand and select Stories From Home). aaronzeghers.com Finalist, Oh My Congratulations to Going Places contributor Shel Zolkewich, whose Belugas, Birds and Bears, Oh My story (Summer 2013) on northern Manitoba lodges was a nalist at the 2013 North American Travel Journalist Association Awards.
