M A R C H 2 0 2 1 | 5 P E R S P EC T I V E T he new year is well underway, and soon it will be time for the RAIC's 2021 Awards Season. Due to the ongo- ing need for social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the celebration of the awarded individuals, teams, and projects will occur in a virtual environment. The RAIC is pleased to showcase our award recipients during our annual Conference on Architecture, which will be held virtually as well. For 2021, the RAIC will be celebrating the winners of our Annual Awards and our Awards of Excellence as well. A full description of the prizes can be found below. ANNUAL AWARDS RAIC Gold Medal The Gold Medal recognizes a significant body of work deemed to be a major contribution to Canadian architecture and having a lasting influence on the theory and/or practice of architecture, either through demonstrated excellence in design, research, or education. Emerging Architectural Practice Award This award recognizes an emerging architectural practice that has con- sistently produced distinguished architecture. The award recognizes the achievements of the practice for the quality of their built work, service to their clients, innovations in practice, and public recognition. Emerging Architect Award Originally known as the Young Architect Award, this prize recognizes an emerging architect for excellence in design, leadership, and/or service to the profession. It is intended to inspire other individuals to become licensed and to strive for excellence in their work. The Prix du XXe Siècle Presented by the RAIC and the National Trust for Canada, this award recognizes buildings "of the modern movement and recent heritage" that have become landmarks of Canadian architecture. The prize cel- ebrates design quality as well as enduring excellence, recognizing the design of the original architect or firm as well as the ongoing steward- ship of the owner of the building. AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE Advocate for Architecture This award endeavours to celebrate an individual who has made a pub- lic contribution to architecture in Canada. Candidates may be found among clients or patrons, educators, public servants, architects, allied professions, and others. The RAIC's advocacy efforts emphasize a better built environment and socially responsible architecture as well as sus- tainability, preservation of architectural history, and living conditions in First Nation settlements. The award recognizes long-term commitment to the profession at a national, regional, or local level. Allied Arts Medal A Canadian artist or designer is celebrated through this prize for their outstanding achievement in creating artwork that is integrated with the architecture and the built environment. Any medium allied to archi- tecture is eligible, including but not limited to murals, sculpture, glass, fabric, lighting, furniture, water, sound, site-specific installation, video, digital, and industrial and landscape design. Green Building The Green Build Award honours outstanding achievements of high-per- formance architecture in Canada for buildings that are environmentally advanced and healthy places to live, work, learn, heal, and play. The award recognizes excellence in building design that significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment, enhance occupant and community health and well-being, provide for ecological restoration or regeneration. Innovation in Architecture Architectural innovation is celebrated through this prize. Even though the parameters are broad, it includes the research and development and the applied use of new technology; unique adaptation of existing technology; new project delivery methods; new design processes; new details; or the development of new methods related to the construction process. Innovations cover a wider range of architectural endeavours including, but not limited to Management, Project Delivery, Energy, or Building Envelope. President's Award for Multimedia Representations of Architecture This award recognizes a narrative about buildings and cities that pro- motes the public's understanding of architecture, the role of architects, and the impact architecture has on the lives of Canadian across the country. Remember to check the RAIC website in the early spring for more infor- mation and announcements about the winning projects for 2020. Despite being unable to get together in person, the RAIC is proud to celebrate the achievements of architects across the country and their ongoing contributions to excellence in the built environment.
