M A R C H 2 0 2 1 | 49 Trout Lake School & Elizabeth Quintal School P H OTO G R A P H Y BY J O EL K L A SS EN /CO U RT E SY S TA N T EC With Stantec as the bridging architect, A&E Group and long-time colleague Aman Builders Inc. were obliged to abide by an extremely com- pressed schedule. "We got the go-ahead in January of 2018 and had to submit for building permits in February," says A&E principal Hesham Elfar. A&E principal Keith Nunas adds, "We constructed a highly detailed BIM using Revit to create the work- ing drawings, and about 90 percent of those drawings were issued by the time Aman was installing pilings in April." Key elements of the facil- ity were reviewed with its respective costs and a cost model was developed, which in turn formed the basis of the detailed design. Regular weekly meetings with PTFN, Stantec, Alberta Infrastructure, Indigenous Service Canada, Northern Lakes College, and Aman were key to maintaining the schedule, mitigating problem areas, minimizing misdi- rection, and transmitting critical information. The actual construc- tion was also facilitated by working drawings that "kept the designs as sim- ple as possible: standard steel frame construction for the walls, and so on," says Nunas. Also, all trades worked simultaneously on site to meet pro- duction schedules. Now that both schools are com- plete, Wigton says of their popularity, "We now enjoy 94 percent attendance at Elizabeth Quintal compared to the old school, where it was tough to get 30 percent attendance. It took many years to reach this point, but we're extremely happy with the outcome."
