For larger openings, frames may be supplied broken down for field assembly. Aluflam's clear fire-rated glazing is manufactured by Vetrotech and conforms to CPSC 16 CFR 1201 (CAT I & II) standards for impact, while pro- viding excellent clarity and sound reduction. Johnson Controls this summer continued to release new and improved fire safety systems that reinforce the company's reputation for advancing the cause of smart and sustainable buildings, with Tyco, YORK, Metasys, and Simplex being just a few of the brands with which it is associated. To satisfy the ongoing demand for improvements in smoke detection tech- nology, Johnson Controls in September introduced advanced smoke sensors built upon the established performance of its flagship TrueAlarm technology. The TrueAlarm sensors, available for the Simplex product line, provide earlier detection, better fire type recognition, and fewer nuisance alarms, thanks to sophisticated algorithms that analyze particles and determine whether they are generated by an actual fire rather than smoke or steam from cooking. The ability of the redesigned TrueAlarm sensors to intelligently differentiate between high-risk fires and burning food or steam is especially important for commercial spaces such as hotels, dormitories, and hospitals. In the realm of sprinklers, Johnson Controls recently launched its first residen- tial concealed sidewall fire sprinkler. The Tyco Rapid Response Series LFII 4.2K Concealed Sidewall Sprinkler features a decorative flat-plate cover that con- ceals the sprinkler within the wall, making it ideal for estheti- cally sensitive residential spaces such as homes, apartments, dor- mitories, and hotels. This coincides with Johnson announcing the expansion of its commercial fire sprinkler line: designed to deliver safe and dependable fire protection, the Tyco RFII Horizontal Sidewall (HSW) Concealed Sprinkler is designed for installation along a wall or the side of a beam. It fits in a typical two-by-four stud frame and sheetrock wall structure, giving contractors additional installation flexibility. Also this summer, Johnson Controls announced that its LFP Antifreeze, which is the industry standard for freeze protection in wet pipe sprinkler systems and complements the full line of Tyco fire suppression products, is now listed for system volumes of up to 500 gallons. Finally, as Allied Market Research predicts, fire analysis is a huge market, and Affinity Firestop Consultants Inc.'s group of professionals with a diverse array of experience undertakes forensic study of all engineering and archi- tectural drawings, fire-related data as well as inspections and audits to help develop safe buildings. One recent area of concern for the Winnipeg-based company is the trend in developing taller multi-storey wood buildings, and it recently finished a docu- ment review of an assisted living complex in Winnipeg whose design called for a floor construction technique of wood CLT panels, six-eight inches thick, placed on CLT beams supported by columns. The purpose of the review was to exam- ine the continuity of fire separations and work with the architects, engineers, and sub trades to determine where improvements could be made in relation to building system pathways through the fire rated wood CLT panel floor system. Rob Hlady, principal at Affinity, points out that while plastic service pipes with firestop collars that close off the pipe openings during a fire condition are a typical ingredient in traditional concrete, rated gypsum board/wood joist or steel joist floor assemblies, their use in wood CLT panel buildings has currently not been tested in floor assemblies by a third party testing laboratory. "And as more wood buildings are proposed for the commercial and institutional mar- kets, that's where our document review services become valuable: because we identify potential issues and seek alternatives," he says. "Often, the solutions are simple and effective, such as using anchors for the firestop system that are inset deeper into the wood CLT panel." Affinity's document review and other services are hardly confined to wood buildings. The company recently completed inspection of a variety of buildings in Edmonton's Ice District (including Rogers Place, the Marriott Hotel and Stantec Tower) and is active on a number of projects throughout Western Canada.
