Additionally, the lobby of the community centre was expanded to reflect the demand for communal zones. Extensive interior wood clad- ding and concrete were "chosen to represent elements of nature, used in an urban way," he says. Buttcon Limited and The Atlas Corporation in a joint venture com- menced construction in July of 2017. "A joint venture was necessary due to the sheer scope of the work," Friesen says. "Delays due to weather and some trade strikes rendered our original comple- tion dates unrealistic, but the schools welcomed students in January, and the recreation and childcare centres opened in the summer." Although COVID-19 has imposed restrictions on the usage of the Canoe Landing Campus, end-users have expressed their enthusiasm for the facilities, and Duckworth-Pilkington summarizes their value. "Serving an important social function, the campus architecture supports a new platform for connection," he says. "In a vertical, urban community where neighbours often experience solitary lifestyles, this interaction is vital."
