Herb, her spouse of 40 years, had been suffering from the devastating effects of Alzheimer's disease. Sadly, Herb passed away last August, and although the disease robbed him of precious memories, Marie says his final years were the best they could be, thanks in large measure to the care he received at the Pavilion – one of two buildings (the other is the Weatherby Pavilion) that make up the residential care facility at Peace Arch Hospital. "They were good to him," says Marie." And they were good to me, too." Meaningful project After Herb passed away, Marie, who turns 90 in June, decided that she wanted to give something back to the Dr. Al Hogg Pavilion (operated by Fraser Health). As she reflected on her husband's time there, she was struck by how the simple pleasure of bathing meant so much to him and to the other fragile seniors. Bathing is crucial for health and well-being, but Marie knew it also contributed to Herb's quality of life. When it was announced that the pavilion's six bathing suites would undergo extensive renovations, Marie found a project she could support. 10 health + care spr ing /sum m er 2013 p10-11 Bath Suite Reno.indd 10 13-04-12 2:09 PM
