The artwork integrates the B.C. coastline with a depiction of a wild spawning salmon swimming upstream towards a grizzly bear. Hansen's piece highlights the interconnectedness of our ecosystems. Receive one entry for every $100 you donate. AND, your donation will be matched thanks to a $50,000 matching fund set up by Sitka Foundation! Donate online at psf.ca or via the formvelope attached in this magazine. Work Continues in the Salish Sea PLEASE HELP US RAISE $100,000 FOR PSF SALMON RESTORATION PROJECTS THIS YEAR-END, SO THAT URGENTLY NEEDED PROJECTS CAN CONTINUE C a lifornia has lost more than 90 per cent of its kelp habitat in some areas due to warming waters and explosions in sea urchin populations that munch on kelp. The bad news is that kelp provides vital habitat for wild Pacific salmon, offering shade that keeps water cooler, and refuge from predators, while also calming fast- flowing currents and supporting salmon food sources. The good news is that kelp is highly resilient. It is often the first species to grow back after environmental disturbances. California's struggles have resulted in a lot of research and information on its kelp populations and a restoration management plan. Climate change is a big concern for kelp, but B.C. has lagged behind in research efforts. Sarah Schroeder is using satellite images to study kelp habitat in the Strait of Georgia.
