Energy efficient systems included a solar chimney – a first for an Alberta school – that circulates the air to reduce heating and cooling costs, as well as the solar panels. In order to fulfill the school board's wish that Westpark stand out visu- ally, the architects used split face block for the first seven feet of the building's exterior, and metal siding of different colours above that, capped by an angled portion of rooftop that cantilevers gracefully outward. "Inside the flooring is mostly polished concrete, and the ceil- ing is T-bar with exposed areas – again, something the students requested for the sake of seeing normally hidden building areas," says Flinn. Ground broke on the proj- ect in October of 2017, with Shunda Consulting & Construction Management undertaking strict safety and noise restriction precautions to ensure the existing middle school remained fully operational through- out the building process. "Despite the site constraints and unusually wet weather, the construction was uneventful," says Della Ruston, associ- ate superintendent, system services, at Red Deer Public Schools. Ruston adds, "Wherever the stu- dents walk in Westpark, they're learning. We couldn't be more excited with our new school." To which Henry adds by way of conclusion, "If it inspires copycat schools down the road, I would be equally thrilled."
