OCTOBER 2019 | 53 PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY INHOUSE BY BEAVERBROOK Andre Lema, manager of busi- ness development at Western Archrib (which fabricated all the wood compo- nents for the three-storey structure), says, "The process to construction had to be quite interactive in order to get it right for Beaverbrook. Once underway, all the preplanning and prefabrication paid off, as the building went together like a set of Lego." The orientation of the two structures allowed for a central south-facing urban plaza to be developed, with an overhang to allow future cafes and restaurants to expand outside during the summer months. "A feature canopy trellis infills the walkway between the two buildings and wraps around to become the entry to the residential tower," says Osborne, adding that an internal street with a drop-off and roundabout was created for the entrance. InHouse by Beaverbrook secured rezoning for the development in March 2016, and Pagnotta Industries Inc. broke ground on the site in May 2017. Osborne says, "All renovations are challenging, but everyone involved in this project came together as a true team, from the builders to the struc- tural and geotechnical engineers." Fereday concludes, "Right now we're sourcing a mix of local and indepen- dent businesses for West Block's retail/ commercial component, to ensure that it becomes a true destination in Edmonton. The finished product looks exactly like the renderings, which aimed for high quality at every turn, and we're extremely happy with the outcome." The office space is almost fully leased due to the unique features of the project.
