cmba-bcconference 18 | spring 2017 cmba-achc.ca CmB magazine A Heroic Effort Superheroes, both real and costumed, made their presence known at the sold-out 2017 CMBA-BC Conference and Trade Show held at the River Rock Hotel and Casino on February 21 and 22. e show provided plenty of opportunities for fun (such as the Superhero Masked Party), networking (Lender Matrix Speed Dating, networking meals and networking breaks) and education. As difficult as it is to capture it all in a few words, here are some of the highlights. Real-life superheroes and the event's keynote speakers Steve Murphy and Javier Peña related their experience with decision-making under pressure. ese gentlemen were DEA agents from the U.S. who were instrumental in bringing down Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. e dramatized version of their story was seen on the hit Netflix series Narcos. Government representatives of the new B.C. second mortgage program for first-time home buyers added to brokers' arsenals by explaining how to qualify clients for the program. Economist Helmut Pastrick provided a B.C. economic and housing outlook. e Acting Registrar and the Managing Director of Mortgage Brokers each provided guidance as to new regulatory requirements, particularly a comprehensive update on the new fee disclosure requirements. e Executive Director of Finance Brokers Association of Australia offered valuable insights as to their experience with the same kind of requirements. Industry regulators, practitioners and partners sat on panels in breakout sessions providing practical advice, guidance and commentary on current industry issues. e trade show component of the event saw brokers and lenders connecting at the booths and sharing information, programs and opportunities to improve their businesses. Of course, there was also food and drink aplenty. To boot, everyone walked away with a professional headshot and a sturdy piece of luggage bearing the now broadly recognized MB logo. A few lucky attendees also received door prizes, such as trips and liquor. e secret to a successful show is to leave the audience wanting more. Indeed, there is already much anticipation for the 2018 event, expected to again be sold out and a smashing success! 1 2 4 3
