Whale Watching and Eco-Tourism Steps Up salmon Steward magazine 7 Leveraging Community Resources and Know-How The cornerstone of the Pacic Salmon Foundation's activities has always been supporting the work of community groups that steward local salmon habitat. The Salish Sea Marine Survival Project is a natural extension of these key partnerships. BC Shore Spawners is helping to study forage sh and their impact on juvenile salmon abundance. BC Conservation Foundation partnered with Cowichan Tribes to study juvenile Chinook habitat use in the Cowichan River. SeaChange Marine Conservation Society, Galiano Conservancy Association and Mayne Island Conservancy are partnering with University of Victoria to study kelp and eelgrass habitat. Did you know that about 90 per cent of a southern resident orca's summer diet consists of Chinook salmon? It only makes sense that whale watching companies have joined the growing list of supporters of the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project. Leading the charge are Eagle Wing Tours, Prince of Whales Whale Watching and Orca Spirit, which have all added a $1 optional conservation contribution to customers' invoices. So far, the new program has raised more than $30,000. Year-End Appeal Donors Make a Di"erence Robert Gayton Judy Hager e Patrick J. Connolly Family e Ritchie Foundation Eric Peterson, Tula Foundation WJD (John) Woodward Thank you. Donations to the Pacic Salmon Foundation support projects that address salmon conservation, restoration and enhancement across the province. These individuals and organizations have made cumulative donations of $100,000 or more to the Foundation. The year-end appeal helped support 33 projects in 2015 like the seal predation study. Tony and Kimberley Allard Stuart E. Wolfe Rudy North Dick and Valerie Bradshaw Kinder Morgan Last year the Pacic Salmon Foundation's year- end appeal was the most successful to date. We raised $152,983 for the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project, and this year we're hoping to exceed that amount. Some major donors who gave last year include Bob Gayton, Knelson Family Foundation, Westcoasters Fishing Group, Kinder Morgan, PEETZ Fishing & Outdoors, Methanex, Doug Andrew, Houssian Family Foundation and the Fairbairn Foundation. To incentivize donors this year, Rudy North will match every tax-receiptable donation made by December 31 at midnight up to $50,000. Conserving Salmon Habitat in the Skeena TransCanada Corporation donated almost $300,000 to help the Pacific Salmon Foundation provide ongoing public access to baseline scientific information for Skeena salmon and their habitats – a critical need identified by federal, provincial and First Nations governments, industry, environmental stewards, and others. The support also helped restore salmon habitat in the Skeena Watershed through the Community Salmon Program.
