DECEMBER 2015 | 63 RENDERING COURTESY HARIRI PONTARINI ARCHITECTS One Bloor East it was obvious that the biggest construc- tion challenge would be working space – or lack thereof. The City had already decreed that no parking would be allowed on the main streets of Bloor or Yonge, so all deliveries and other trans- portation were confined to a side street. Anticipating the challenges of the confined space, Hariri had come up with unique movement solutions, such as an 11-metre diameter turntable at the southeast corner of the podium to facilitate commercial trucks in entering and leaving the truck loading area from Hayden Street. Tucker HiRise found an equally unique solution to the challenge of transporting large amounts of mate- rial efficiently up the 76-storey edifice, via the first North American installa- tion of KONE JumpLift technology – an advanced, self-climbing elevator that operates during construction in a build- ing's permanent hoistway. With operating speeds of up to 800- feet per minute, the system is five times faster than traditional external hoists, and with all transportation activities tak- ing place inside in a dry and windproof shaft, construction workers can safely move throughout the building regardless of weather conditions, allowing building construction to proceed unhindered. Peter Carello, Tucker HiRise's proj- ect director, says his company got the idea to use KONE from a supplier, "and it's proven to be a major asset in the construction phase." A less spectacular but equally useful solution to the chal- lenges of the confined space was the use of the completed ground floor as a staging area. INTO-ELECTRONICS INC. worked together with Great Gulf Group and Tucker HiRise on the engineering and integration of the security systems for One Bloor East from an early stage. The project will include more than 300 access control card readers, more than 120 networked high-resolution sur- veillance cameras, over 50 intercom stations and a number of touch-screen visitor entry stations. The access control system has been integrated with the state-of-the-art KONE Destination Control Elevator System. A remotely monitored video analytics camera system provided secu- rity during the construction stage.
