Down the garden path A sanctuary in the heart of the city, the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden was the first authentic classical Chinese garden ever built outside of China. Walk along the peaceful paths to admire the harmony of water, plants and architecture and see why this was named the world's top city garden in a recent book by National Geographic. Other memorable Vancouver gardens include VanDusen Botanical Garden, the sunken gardens at Queen Elizabeth Park, the UBC Botanical Garden & Greenheart Canopy Walkway and the Nitobe Memorial Garden, a traditional Japanese tea and stroll garden. Birds of a feather Both the dedicated birdwatcher and amateur naturalist will be amazed by the wide variety of birdlife, wintering shorebirds and waterfowl found within Metro Vancouver and the surrounding area. Lost Lagoon, in Stanley Park, is a conveniently located place for birdwatching. Several adventure companies offer guided birdwatching experiences, including a bald-eagle-viewing float trip at Brackendale, one of the world's top spots for viewing these magnificent birds. Savour a mug of your favourite brew at one of the hundreds of coffee shops sprinkled throughout the city – local hotspots like Caffè Artigiano and Milano Coffee are great places for another Vancouver pastime: people watching. Urban paths and forest trails have been drawing cycling enthusiasts to Vancouver for years. Options include pedalling leisurely through Stanley Park or the University of British Columbia campus, or navigating rugged trails on the North Shore. Rent a bike to go on your own or sign up for a guided adventure with companies such as Cycle City Tours, Bayshore Bicycles & Rollerblade Rentals, English Bay Bike Rentals, Spokes Bicycle Rentals, Ezee Riders or Cycle BC Rentals and Tours.
