WHO Cares About Salmon? salmon Steward magazine 11 E ach year, Pacific salmon undertake a remarkable journey — unlike anything else in nature — through the oceans, estuaries and rivers, all the way back to their natal streams. Along the way, they touch the lives of a diverse array of people, each of whom have their own unique relationship with and reliance upon this iconic West Coast fish. The Pacific Salmon Foundation has built a track record of success catalyzing change for Pacific salmon by bringing these diverse stakeholders together for common goals and initiatives that restore and conserve wild Pacific salmon populations. In this edition of Salmon Steward, the Pacific Salmon Foundation has invited five key stakeholders — from the sectors of First Nations, recreational fisheries, community stewardship, scientific research and community education — to write, in their own words, about what salmon mean to them and the role that they, and all British Columbians, have to play in protecting this precious natural resource. Five unique perspectives on the importance of Pacific salmon in British Columbia
