Now, thanks to Kleefeld, Manitoba, photographer and author Dennis Fast, we can meet more arctic wildlife and bring their story home. Written for children aged two to five, Princess chronicles the tale of a mother polar bear and her two cubs and their adventures up north. GRAMMY-AWARD-WINNING jazz vocalist and pianist Diane Schuur will be donning her iconic sunglasses as guest artist at the Brandon Jazz Festival this spring. Blind since birth from retinopathy of prematurity (fellow musician Stevie Wonder has the same condition), Schuur has released more than 20 albums. Among them are Timeless (1986) and Diane Schuur and the Count Basie Orchestra (1987), each earning the American artist a Grammy for Best Female Jazz Vocal Performance. Having performed at Carnegie Hall and the White House, her next performance venue will be Brandon's own Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium. The Brandon Jazz Festival is a non-competitive, education-based event for schools and community groups from across Canada and the U.S. For only $5 a day, the general public can also come and go, attending the first- class performances, as well as workshops on a range of musical topics, from jazz improvisation and ballad singing to history and listening. T he pièce de résistance, four evening concer ts featuring Schuur along with the Brandon University Jazz Ensemble, will draw crowds from Brandon and beyond.
