D E S T I N AT I O N S Maui the Newest hotel The most buzzed-about Maui hotel in recent memory is the year-old 297-room Andaz Maui (maui.andaz.hyatt.com) on Wailea's Mokapu Beach. Eschewing the stately plantation arches of so many Maui five-stars, the Andaz goes for locally inspired, witty modernism. Even the clientele largely look like they've stepped off the runway. So small surprise, then, that the entrance resembles a cat walk and arrives at a loft-like lobby where a single concierge checks in guests with a few taps of an iPad and an offer of locally sourced lavender lemonade, while welcoming you to a world of terraced infinity pools. Despite the luxurious surroundings, the Andaz is surprisingly family-friendly, offering daily children's activities, a kids' menu, a handy 24-hour market, and a large shallow pool perfect for younger guests. The Andaz also doesn't stray too far from aloha. LEED certification, filtered water spouts (not plastic bottles) and reusable shopping bags remind guests of the finite resources of a small island in the Pacific. And local ingredients are ubiquitous – from the US$45 breakfast buffet to the 'a - wili Spa, where guests can blend scents and botanicals into their own lotions and sham- poos. And yes: that fresh citrus cream you just mixed up did come from orange rinds peeled in the Morimoto Maui restaurant earlier. the Meal (aNd happy hour) Migrant (migrantmaui.com), the hot new sunset- view resto in the Wailea Beach Marriott Resort, is the brainchild of TV's Top Chef finalist Sheldon Simeon. You won't find any of Wailea's notori- ously pricey fare here. "I wanted the food to pay homage to immigrants who settled the [Hawaiian] islands," says Simeon. "My grandparents immigrated from the Philippines. I grew up amongst immigrants and grew up eating Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Filipino food. The restaurant's tagline reflects this joy of comfort food: 'Come My House. Eat.' " And come they do, especially for the daily half-price happy hour.
