Amy Dopson
Founder and Owner,
Pac 10 Tutoring
Age: 27
A
drive to see her community
grow stronger fuels the
woman who created Pac 10
Tutoring in Prince Rupert.
Since opening in 2009, Pac 10 has
grown from 30 to 94 students at a
time, with a wait-list. Dopson cred-
its that growth to guidance from
her mentors and to word-of-mouth
endorsements.
Dopson's success is all the
more remarkable for the barriers
she had to overcome. "Beyond
gender or ethnicity, it was my
age that posed the most chal-
lenge," says Dopson, who
is Tsimshian First Nations
from Kitselas as well as of
European descent. "When I
began looking for funding at
22, I had to prove to everyone
that I could provide this
service and do a good job."
Business and community
service are interwoven for Dopson,
who gives back to the community
by donating over $27,000 to local
groups such as the Aboriginal Skills
Employment Partnership, and she
awards $1,000 in bursaries every
year to help give hard-working
students the opportunity to pursue
their aspirations. – A.B.
