With numerous changes to the province's outdated liquor laws brewing – as well as a growing number of local distilleries, craft-beer makers and sophisticated cocktail lounges popping up all over town – Vancouver's booze industry is coming of age. is shift re ects a more grown-up attitude in the way the city views and consumes alcohol. Clearly, I'm not talking about the overindulgers among the Granville Street clubbing crowd on a Saturday night, but rather a cosmopolitan cocktail culture that has raised the bar (pun intended) to complement Vancouver's world-class cuisine. With that in mind, we felt that now was the perfect time to celebrate the spirits of the city, so we got right to work tasting locally crafted beer, wine and cocktails to bring you the best Vancouver has to o er (tough gig, right?). We tapped into the expertise of the top local bartenders to nd out where and what to drink and got their tips on how to stock your bar like a pro. We also explored the city to help you digest our booming brewery industry, and hit the road to uncork some of the Okanagan's best wines. We didn't forget about spring, though. is issue has plenty of expert advice on how to refresh your wardrobe, garden, patio and even yourself this season. So cheers, Vancouver, and keep letting us know what you think about your new city magazine and how you're living the good life in our amazing city. We love to hear your feedback. Janine Verreault Editor, BCLiving jverreault@canadawide.com / @BCLiving Adam Blasberg of Adam Blasberg Photography shot this month's cover story (p.53). The best part about this shoot was working with professionals who are in a league of their own. They are all kind, exciting and very creative. I learned that being a bartender is a profession that deserves respect – it's a taxing job. My favourite place to go for a drink is Yew Bar on a Sunday night, and I always love a good glass of red wine. Julia Dilworth wrote this month's story on patio and outdoor furniture trends (p.39). The best part about working on this piece was talking to designers and fi nding out straight from the horses' mouths what's hot and happenin' this season. My favourite pub in Vancouver is the rough-around-the-edges Brickhouse in Chinatown: old '70s couches, thrift-store debris covering the walls, good music and great character. BCLiving associate editor Michael Small wrote this month's story on Cirque du Soleil's TOTEM. The best part about working on this assignment was exploring the Cirque headquarters in Montreal and seeing all that goes into creating a world- class show. I learned that I'll never be in the shape it takes to wear a leotard. The best place to go for a drink is where everybody knows my name. My go-to drink is gin when I'm feeling upbeat, and Scotch when I want to wind down. Contributors p10-11_Ed+Contribs.indd 11 2014-03-13 11:01 AM
