february 2014 /33 Paint & Coatings Whet Your Palette BRUSHING UP ON PAINT COLOUR TRENDS FOR 2014 by laurie Jones In keeping with the ever-changing land- scape of interior design, paint and stain manufacturers are offering a wide variety of colours to choose from for 2014. While neutrals continue to be strong, bold colours are also in vogue for those want- ing to make a brighter statement. Sherwin-Williams introduced Exclusive Plum as its 2014 Colour of the Year. "Exclusive Plum is a versatile colour that can be used in a variety of spaces," says Jackie Jordan, director of colour marketing at Sherwin- Williams. "For a cozy, masculine den, it can be paired with accents of copper and well-worn leather. For a softer look, Exclusive Plum can be layered with gold, grey and white to create an elegant, dreamy bedroom, or highlighted against white subway tile and chrome �ixtures for a statement master bathroom." Pops of magenta and chartreuse can liven up Exclusive Plum for a more energetic space. "When paired with creamy whites or other neutrals, it can turn any space into a refreshing retreat," says Jordan. "This dusky, �iltered violet is re�ined without being stuffy, elegant yet easy, and layered with romantic potential. It has an amazing quality and can be adapted for nearly any space, whether used as an accent or for an entire room." Sherwin-Williams Colour Forecast 2014 is com- prised of 38 colours that are grouped into four pal- ettes: Reasoned, Diaphanous, Intrinsic and Curiosity – the group that includes Exclusive Plum. Benjamin Moore brings its Colour of the Year, Breath of Fresh Air, to market for 2014. This ethereal blue serves as a new neutral that is functional. "We chose Breath of Fresh Air because we were seeing it across several different environments – it's our new neutral," says Ellen O'Neill, creative director at Benjamin Moore. For the 2014 Colour Trends collection, Benjamin Moore decided to break away from the pack with a collection that is not only rich and enduring, but also livable for today's homeowner or designer as each hue resonates with many different styles. The pal- ette of 23 colours not only stand on their own but also work well in harmony, allowing the transitions of space and colour to �low seamlessly. "Colour is the ultimate form of personal expression," says Sharon Grech, colour expert at Benjamin Moore. "We curated this collection to help consumers create beautiful spaces with con�idence." PPG Pittsburgh Paints named Turning Oakleaf, a soft, but energetic buttercream yellow, as its 2014 Colour of the Year. Experts from PPG Industries expect the colour to have a prominent role in home decor this year as part of their forecast for use of brighter, more optimistic colours among homeowners. "Homeowners have moved away from the muted hues in�luenced by economic factors in recent years," says Dee Schlotter, brand manager, The Voice of Color program. "Turning Oakleaf, which is soft enough to be a neutral but bright enough to generate a sunshine-like energy, represents a trend toward warmth in harmo- nious living, deep appreciation for the surrounding natural elements and a thorough understanding of enlightened philosophies." The key trend colours for PPG Pittsburgh Paints are presented in signature �ive-colour palette cards that create colour opportunities for all design elements: New Spirit – Turning Leaf plus calming and natural greens and a bold reddish-brown; Hi-Breed – pale pinks and oranges accompanied by soft grey; Mosaic – vibrant primary colours along with a neutral, sandy brown; Magni�igance – creamy silk, bold reds, blues and black; and Theorem – blues, greys and creams. Colour in home decor may be all the rage, but Canadians are stuck on neutrals.
