Move Over, CSI Veteran crime reporter and author Barb Pacholik investigates more Saskatchewan crime stories in her latest book. PLANTING THE SEED Kick-start spring with a visit to Regina's Floral Conservatory and its monthly Lil' Gardeners Club, where both young and old can experience the art of gardening. Preschool children up to age five are eligible, along with their parents or grandparents, to enjoy a 90-minute program of hands-on experiences at the bubbles, sandbox, water table and story-time stations. There are also plenty of garden-themed toys on hand, from wheelbarrows and shovels to watering cans. Budding green thumbs learn about plants and how to grow them, plus they get to take a plant home. Regina Floral Conservatory, 1450B Fourth Ave., Regina; 306-781-4769; reginafloralconservatory.ca/ index.php/events/lilgardeners-club 2014 dates: February 25, March 25 and April 29; $8/family drop-in. Pre-registration is recommended. Members of the Lil' Instead of tuning in to the next Castle, Murdoch Mysteries or other TV crime drama, sink into a new book about Saskatchewan's own spine-chilling history of homicides, missing people and lost evidence. Boiling Point & Cold Cases: More Saskatchewan Crime Stories, by Regina author Barb Pacholik, is the third in a series of true crime stories that took place in the back roads, backyards and back alleys of this province. A veteran crime reporter at the Leader Post, Pacholik wrote the books – each contains 40 cases dating from the 1800s to today – with the help of former colleague and newspaper reporter Jana Pruden. As Pacholik, a long-time CAA member, says: "I remain fascinated by the depth and breadth of Saskatchewan's true crimes and criminals – from the bizarre to the banal, and the ingenious to the incomprehensible." The stories also reveal how no one is truly immune from becoming a criminal or a crime victim. "Sometimes you're just in the wrong place, wrong time," she says. $19.95; University of Regina Press; uofrpress.ca/publications/ Boiling-Point-and-Cold-Cases Tap into your inner Sherlock Holmes and pick up the first two of the series too: Sour Milk & Other Saskatchewan Crime Stories and Paper Cows & More Saskatchewan Crime Stories.
