g r h t: in the community With your support, the PSF has made the following grants to date in 2013: Changing Tack Since his 50-year career as a commercial fisherman on the Fraser River ended, Terry Slack has been spearheading salmon conservation initiatives. Lately, however, the 72 year old has spent considerable time passing on his knowledge to the next generation. "Education is very important to me," he says. "It didn't used to be, but I've kind of switched [because] we're seeing more people not understanding the river itself." The cornerstone of Slack's efforts has been Fraser River Park, where he has, in consultation with the Pacific Salmon Foundation and through a $5,000 Foundation grant, helped establish information kiosks, pocket parks and walkways that encourage families to explore, learn about and, most crucially, enjoy the waterway. "The kids love it. [They] are really excited about going down with their family and having a picnic, and waiting for these fish to come up to the surface," Slack says. "One little girl said, 'When are they going to dance, Terry?'" Slack himself is a frequent fixture in the area, his grandson Jeramie in tow, handing out pamphlets on everything from how estuaries work to the top spots to check out along the Fraser. The Foundation highlighted the impact of volunteer groups to convince B.C. MPs to push for fairer distribution of Salmon Conservation Stamp user fees. This resulted in an increase in B.C.'s share of stamp user fees from about 20 per cent to 100 per cent, and making $1 million more in funds available to community projects through the Foundation's Community Salmon Program.
