D E C E M B E R 2 0 2 2 | 21 Architectural Woodwork P H OTO G R A P H Y CO U RT E S Y M O R I N WO O D The architectural woodwork sector is looking incredibly strong for 2023 by ROBIN BRUNET T here's nothing like pent-up demand to galvanize an industry that has seen more than its fair share of ups and downs, and such seems to be the case in 2022 for the architectural woodworking sector, with everyone from millworkers to fixture suppliers reporting an avalanche of work and new market offerings. Case in point: Morinwood, the Victoria, B.C.-based firm that is well known for collaborating on the most challeng- ing construction projects, many of them institutional (its scope includes architectural millwork, systems furniture, metal labs, acoustic panelling, wall protection, and specialties). Tom Morin, president at Morinwood, says, "We've been super busy, going flat out; it's been a fantastic year." One major project, now completed, is the new $100-million Cascades Casino Delta for Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Ltd. "That was a great project because there wasn't a lot of repetition, everything was made to order, and the nature of the facility was such that we really had an opportunity to shine," Morin says of the work that encompassed outfitting two restaurants and providing wall panelling, metal and glass fixtures, and plentiful finishes throughout the gaming floors. Morinwood is now focusing attention on the upcoming construction of the new $887.4-million Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan. However, in prep- ping for the project (which recently broke ground), Morin confronts a challenge that has become well known throughout his sector: labour. "Recruiting will be a challenge because this is a huge project in a small market," he explains. Morin is considering setting up a stand-alone training program, with accreditation, from which he can hire the best talent for the job. "It needs to be shorter than a four year apprenticeship but still accredited, and if I can work out the regulatory and other requirements it will not only be an effective way to ensure enough manpower in Duncan but also for projects down the road – because there is no shortage of demand in sight. We'll also be busy with daycares and laboratories at the universities of Victoria and B.C. in 2023: all of these institutional projects have long timelines, which is great for us. So if I can get on top of the recruitment issue, it will truly be great times ahead." JOIN US Cascades Casino Delta, Delta, B.C.
