Companies like Finest at Sea Ocean Products Ltd. and Canadian Fishing Company (Canfisco) have been stalwart supporters of PSF fundraising galas and community events by donating seafood for guests to enjoy that elevate events while ensuring more dollars go directly to community-based programs. "When I first learned about PSF 20 years ago, I realized that here we have a non-government organization that was as determined as I was to advocate for salmon. Knowing this, I felt that the best possible way forward was to support this organization that I knew has the same goals that I do." – Bob Fraumeni, Finest at Sea Ocean Products Ltd. Since 1987, PSF's Community Salmon Program has benefited from donations directed through the Salmon Conservation Stamp. Commercial fishers can opt to donate to PSF when purchasing the decal required to retain Pacific salmon caught in tidal waters off of Canada's West Coast. These funds support community salmon projects across B.C. and the Yukon. Canfisco is also a key supporter of PSF's Salish Sea Marine Survival Project through leases of their crews and boats for data collection. "Canfisco is pleased to continue our longtime support for the Pacific Salmon Foundation through financial contributions, seafood donations and supplying vessels for scientific charters. Canfisco's direct involvement in PSF's community initiatives such as the Pink Salmon Festival as well as major research projects like the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project and the Gulf of Alaska Expedition validates our commitment to PSF's ongoing work." – Dan Nomura, Canfisco What's more, family-owned operations across our coast support PSF at the local level by attending community fundraisers (pre-COVID-19, and more recently online) and donating product for auctions. Ian Bryce of Natural Gift Seafoods runs his business out of French Creek on Vancouver Island. Supporting salmon is a priority for the entire Bryce clan. "As a family, we have our feet planted in both the commercial and the sport fisheries. The boys are fifth-generation salmon trollers. We were founding members of Nanoose Streamkeepers. We contribute our Natural Gift Seafoods products for fundraising at the annual PSF Dinner in Qualicum Beach, an event we always attend. Additionally, as citizen scientists, our sons Kingsley and Alistair provide Chinook stomach samples year-round to the U Vic research project." – Ian Bryce, Natural Gift Seafoods SALMONCHAMPIONS DONORS MAKING A DIFFERENCE THANK YOU! SUDS FOR SALMON The Pod Pack is a tall-can mix created by several island breweries working together to support PSF. One dollar from each Pack sold is donated to preserving wild B.C. salmon stocks, a vital food source for Southern Resident Killer Whales. In 2019, this collaboration raised more than $15,000. The Pod Pack features four unique beers, all named after local orcas: n "Tahlequah" Pacific Gose by Mayne Island Brewing – Tahlequah or J-35 famously carried her deceased calf (Ti-Tahlequah) for 17 days, while researchers kept watch. In September, she made headlines again for giving birth to a healthy calf, Phoenix (J-57). n "Wave Walker" Helles Bock by Ucluelet Brewing – Wave Walker or L-88 got his name when he was first spotted, riding the wave from his mother's slipstream. He is now the only living member of the L-2 family group. n "Solstice" Plum and Rosemary Saison by Ace Brewing (Courtenay) – Solstice or L-89 is an orca that can be found travelling with his mother since the passing of Granny (J-2), one of the most well-known whales in the world. n "Mike" Rosé Pale Ale by Whistle Buoy Brewing (Victoria) – Mike or J-26 is named after the father of killer whale research, Dr. Michael Bigg.
